description: | The research project analyses methodological problems of social and educational inquiry and especially the relationship between quantitative and qualitative approaches of research. The project is based on the results gained by the applicant during her studies in the University of Cambridge (1998-1999) and in her doctoral dissertation defended at Tallinn Pedagogical University in February 2004. These studies have been focussed on the paradigmatic confrontation and the combined use of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The ultimate goal of the project is to prepare the manuscript of the book on the use of mixed methods in social sciences, which has been ordered by SAGE Publications. To achieve this goal it is necessary to elaborate the results gained this far. As the field of study is relatively new but at the same time of high potential applicability and interest, the importance of methodological questions is bigger than usual in this research project. The criteria by which the successfulness of the project can be assessed are the following: • The relationships between the research questions or aims and the use of various combined research designs has been analysed; based on these results the model for the use of various combined designs in the field of social sciences has been proposed; • The effectiveness of different pedagogical methods has been analysed and piloted in connection with the monograph on the use of mixed methods and the research methods course for postgraduate students; • The manuscript of the monograph on the use of mixed methods in social science and the web-based learning environment supporting the use of combined research designs in research practice have been accomplished. |
