title: Structure and function of genome: reflection of evolutionary and recombination processes; and association with normal and pathological variation
reg no: SF0182721s06
project type: targeted financing
subject: 1.8. Molecular Biology
1.9. Genetics, Physiology and Microbiology
3.1. Basic Medicine
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Maris Laan
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2011
description: The proposed project is focused on genomic segments and genes responsible for the reproductive (gonadotropins and growth hormone/placental lactogen) and cardiovascular function (blood pressure regulation, embryonic morphogenesis of the heart). The research includes the analysis of the dynamic components of the genome (segmental duplications, functionally interacting genes, sense-antisense transcript pairs) and evolutionarily conserved non-coding regions.
Detailed aims and questions: (1) structure, variation, gene conversion activity and evolution, expression and imprinting patterns of LHB/CGB and GH/CSH gene clusters on primate lineage; association of LHB/CGB gene polymorphisms and structural variants with recurrent miscarriage, and GH/CSH variation with intrauterine growth retardation; (2) identification of novel blood pressure regulating genes in Eurasian populations, detection of hypertension-associated polymorphic and haplotypic variants; evolutionarily conserved non-coding genomic segments as gene regulatory elements; role of antisense RNA molecules in regulating genes responsible for hypertension; detection of disease mutations for familiar cases of congenital heart disease in Estonia.
