title: Interactions between fluxes of carbon and water in ecosystems under the influence of changing environment
reg no: SF0182732s06
project type: targeted financing
subject: 1.14. Ecology
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Olevi Kull
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2011
description: Carbon and water cycles are tightly coupled in leaf, plant and ecosystem scales of organization. The main aim of the project is to study this coupling in order to better understand mechanisms behind primary production and carbon sequestration, and to improve predictions related to the impact of the global climate change. The interactions between water and carbon fluxes will be studied in three different scales:
a) in the leaf scal the main emphasis is on stomatal mechanisms and relationship between leaf hydraulic and stomatal conductance;
b) in the whole plant scale the study deals with relationships between xylem transport of water and whole plant carbon acquisition with the particular interest on interactions between water and carbon fluxes in dependence of leaf or branch position in the canopy;
c) the ecosystem level study is directed towards the improved understanding of water cycle influence on ecosystem ability of carbon sequestration. The study is mainly concentrated on Boreal forest and bog ecosystems.
