description: The current research project focuses on the early modern age (Vormoderne) of the Baltic area. The main stress is laid on the studding of the processes undergoing in the society and its structure, comparing them with the similar processes in other Baltic Sea countries. The aim of the project is to find out the long-term trends that have taken place here (e.g. the continuance of the medieval structures, the preservation of the basic lines of the Swedish period also under the Russian rule during the 18th century), and also to follow the characteristic changes of the transition period to modern society (e.g. the absolutist reforms by Carl XI and Catherine II). The extensive aim of the project is the closer integration of the Estonian history with the history writing of the Baltic Sea countries.
