description: The removal of contaminants from heavily polluted wastewaters has been shown to be more effective in the point of view of purification degree and the cost when a combination of different treatment methods is used. Including of the Fenton, a powerful oxidant, to the wastewater’s treatment schemes can substantially improve the wastewater’s purification degree and offer economical benefits. However, the Fenton oxidation is used as a single treatment as there are several limitations that impede the applicability of the Fenton reagent in water/wastewater treatment schemes. Fenton treatment is sensitive to the treatment conditions such as pH, oxidant/catalyst ratio, and scavengers. During the implementation of the project the classic Fenton and different modifications: without pH adjustment (pH close to neutral); with iron powder; with iron on support; with iron minerals; with iron chelators at neutral and slightly basic pH; will be tested. The treatment conditions (pH, temperature, quantity of organic and inorganic constituents) and oxidant doses, especially Fe/H2O2 ratio, will be optimised. A special emphasis would be on the Fenton modifications that favour subsequent biodegradation. The application of modified Fenton aims to create the conditions for including the Fenton oxidation to the wastewater treatment schemes for different types of wastewater – textile industry and food industry wastewaters, oil polluted water and semi-coke leachate (from oil shale thermal treatment).
