description: Fatigue induction through training exercises is one of the rules of training adaptation process to improve athlete capacities by stimulating organism functions. The achieved short-term performance decrement is usually called overreaching. However, if the fatigue accumulation continues the athlete may suffer overtraining which is characterized by long-term performance decrement and the recovery may take up to a year or longer. Therefore, the overtraining should be avoided. However, reliable diagnostic markers for distinguishing between well-trained, overreached or overtrained athletes are lacking in the literature. It is proposed that the activation of several hormonal parameters may be a consequence, not necessarily the primary indicator of overtraining. Recently, it was hypothesized that several cytokines may be involved in the development of overtraining. The purpose of this project is to investigate the effect of different training regimen on several muscle- and adipocytokines to find possible markers for fatigue accumulation in order to prevent athletes from overtraining. In addition, training effects on performance, mood-state and several hormonal axes are monitored. The subjects of different sport disciplines (endurance, power endurance, strength-power) would go through a high intensity/high volume training cycles to induce a state of overreaching. In addition to high load training, also the following recovery cycle would be monitored. They will be tested each week to show the changes and time course of their sport specific performance and several biochemical and psychological markers. This study would give new substantial information of the cytokine response to fatigue accumulation through strenuous training on different sport disciplines and the complex use of different markers for training monitoring for the purpose of effective performance improvement.
