Compared to the flora of the lakes and the coastal sea, the flora of rivers in Estonia far less has been investigated. There is no information about the seasonal and annual changes of plants and algae in the rivers at all. Considering the importance of the vegetation for fishes and invertebrates as a habitat and shelter, it was presumed that changes in the plant and algal communities influence considerably the whole river ecosystem. The goal of this grant project is to enhance the ecological understanding of the role of plants and algae in the rivers. The results of the project will be presented at the international and local scientific meetings, in the NorBAF network, and in international scientific journals. The recommendations given according to the results of the project will help the Estonian Government put into practice the requrements of the EU Water Framework Directive. The students involved in this project could proceed their practical training and collect personal material for their studys and dissertations. |
