title: Assessment of passive remediation approach for treatment of oil-polluted subsurface
reg no: ETF6603
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.14. Environmental Engineering
status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Biology and Geography
head of project: Jaak Truu
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2008
description: The main aim of the current project is to assess the suitability of the monitored natural attenuation (passive remediation) method for treatment of residual oil contamination in subsurface of a closed oil waste dump site. During the project biodegradation activity is estimated using field measurements and microcosm studies, including measurements of metabolic and taxonomic biomarkers. Assays are performed to show do microorganisms from subsurface samples have the potential to transform pollutants. Geochemical data are collected from study site for indirect estimation of transformation processes. Quantitative data are used in mathematical modeling to estimate how long it might take before the contaminant concentrations are lowered to acceptable levels. Also multivariate statistical methods are applied for coupling geochemical and microbiological data in order to find out what environmental factors may limit the rate of intrinsic bioremediation. The proposed project is attempting to explore microbial process of organic contaminants degradation in subsurface which are extremely important in designing new environmental technologies.
