| description: | The main purpose of this research is to draw a more compact and thoroughgoing picture about the changes that took place in the relationship between the church and the state throughout the 20th century in Estonia. The relationship between the church and the state has essentially influenced the possibilities for the expression of personal religious feelings throughout the century. One of the purposes of this research is to find out through comparing of different periods (the first and the second independence time, the occupations and their internal disposition), which are the factors that have constantly influenced the Estonian churchly life in the last century. One of the hypotheses is the statement that in the research of the relations between the church and the state in Estonia during the whole 20th century there should be more attention given to the relationship between the church and the state as it was formed during the first independence period as to a certain kind of a model, which was followed by the churches also in their further activities. The period from the 1970ies until the 1980ies has not been thoroughly researched until nowadays but it is already now on the ground of the little information we have, possible to presume that the liberalization of the relations between the church and the state started up to a certain degree already in the beginning of the 1980ies. As a hypothesis one may presume that at this time the state did not anymore consider the churches to be able to survive. As a result of this project quite a number of scientific articles and final theses about the relations between the church and the state throughout the whole last century are going to be concluded. The primary interest belongs to the Lutheran and Orthodox churches in Estonia. In the last year an international scientific conference is going to be organized and the reports held on this conference are going to be published. |
