title: Effect of electromagnetic radiation on brain oscillations
reg no: ETF6632
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.13. Biomedical Engineering
status: accepted
institution: TTU Faculty of Science
head of project: Hiie Hinrikus
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2009
description: The aim of this study is to evaluate interaction between brain oscillations and modulated external electromagnetic radiation. The effect, if related to the changes in neocortical dynamics, should depend on modulation frequency. To accomplish this purpose, electroencephalographic (EEG) signal is selected as a quantitative measure to describe brain oscillations and bioelectrical activity.
The proposed research will add knowledge to fundamental science about interaction between bioelectromagnetic phenomena in brain and external electromagnetic and possibility to affect nervous system by use of the external EMF.
The application of this knowledge will be extremely important for
- development of new medical technology for diagnostics and treatment of nervous diseases;
- estimation of unwholesome effects of EMF, including cellular phones, on human nervous system.
It is necessary to underline the importance of this project for electromagnetic environment problems, not practically under consideration in Estonia yet.
