title: The influence of students’ cognitive processes on leisure time physical activity
reg no: ETF6634
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 5.5. Pedagogy
status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Exercise and Sport Science
head of project: Vello Hein
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2009
description: The main aim of the project is to investigate using trans-contextual model of the cognitive processes by which students transfer motivation during physical education into physical activity behavior during leisure time. The trans-contextual model proposed by Hagger et al.(2003) consists two social cognitive models of motivation – self-determination theory and the theory of planned behavior. It is hypothesized that perceived behavior of teachers in respect of autonomy support, providing positive feedback and teaching the learning strategy to the students in physical education will affect intrinsic motivation not only in a physical education context but also affect motivation in leisure time context. Intrinsic motivation will then affect the antecedent social cognitive variables involved in making decision to exercise. Also, the hypothesizes that parental and peer autonomy support for children’s physical activity may be have affect on intentions and leisure time physical activity will be tested. The stability of the model will be estimated longitudinally with one-year interim. The statistical package LISREL 8.51 will be used to test psychometrical parameters of the construct validity of questionnaires and structural equation models. In terms of implications for physical education practice the model will help the teachers better understand how their behavior perceived by students in physical education is translated into leisure time physical activity intentions and behavior that is one of the main purpose of the contemporary physical education.
