description: NOx-compounds (NO+NO2) belong to the most hazardous air pollutants. It is known (see the motivation of the project) that for NOx removal have been used photocatalytic effect of TiO2 as well as chemical activity of discharge plasma. Preliminary tests have been carried out of the combined effect of the both (Iwasaki et al). It turned out to be more efficient as compared with the separate influence of TiO2 and discharge. UV irradiation of the discharge acts as a photostimulator of the catalysis, in addition to the immediate impact of the discharge.
The aim of the present project is a thorough in-depth investigation of the combined effect of TiO2+discharge: testing of different TiO2 samples (thin films, powdered catalyser) and different discharge forms. We propose to elucidate the physical and physico-chemical foundations of the combined pollution removal process. As an perspective ultimate goal we see elaboration of a model device, applicable for NOx removal in practice. We will endeavour also to apply the same combined method for SO2 removal.
The project group has necessary qualification for the planned work: long-time experience in discharge physics, construction of ozone generators and pulsed high voltage supplies. The conduction mechanisms and morphology of differently prepared TiO2 films have been studied as well.
