title: Study of transformation of organic biomolecules in aquatic environment
reg no: ETF6720
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.16. Marine Sciences and Limnology
status: accepted
institution: TTU Faculty of Science
head of project: Viia Lepane
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2008
description: The aim of present project is to investigate the transformation of natural organic biomolecules in aquatic environment by modern methods of analytical chemistry: high performance size exclusion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, 3D fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy.
Research will be carried out according to following objectives:
1. Investigation of the transformation of different organic matter classes (humic substances, proteins/peptides, phenols etc.) depending on water types/source including pore water;
2. How are the organic biomolecule transformation processes affected by metal ions;
3. Binding of metal ions to different organic matter classes.
The results of this research should end up with conclusions about the existing organic-metal complexes in natural aquatic systems. Information, with which compound classes the complex is formed is of utmost importance on evaluation of the state of environment and its future prediction. As a result of this project the role of some metal cations on the transformation processes of organic biomolecules will be clarified.
The worked out analytical procedures can be a possibly applied for monitoring and evaluating the ecological state of the aquatic environment.
