description: | The aim of the planned project is to find solutions to the technical and methodological problems that complicate analysis of traditional polyphonic vocal music. These problems have been an obstacle in analysing traditional polyphony since the first decades of the 20th century already. The research material derives mainly from Seto cultural area but also from the musical cultures historically connected to it. In the course of the project also the musical behaviour of younger singers who come from bicultural environment will be analysed. The presumable ways to solve the problems are the next: 1. Recording the singing in chorus through the 8-channels recording system, which enables (a) to notate songs as a score; (b) to analyse microalteration and the actual size of intervals by acoustic methods. 2. Applying playback technique and experimental recordings. This might help to study the rules of creating killõ- and torrõ-parts in the Seto songs. 3. Analysing interviews and video recordings made in different performance situations. This will presumably enable to define the factors influencing musical behaviour. The methodology developed within the framework of the project can also be applied to the research of vocal polyphoniy in other cultures. The results of the project will be accessible through the articles in Estonian, Russian and English, the conference presentations and also via the dynamic online outcome. |
