title: Luminous highly evolved stars in the framework of Gaia
reg no: ETF6810
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.4. Astronomy
status: accepted
institution: Tartu Observatory
head of project: Indrek Kolka
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2009
description: The current project has the goal to contribute to the preparations for the Gaia space mission. We plan to provide the Gaia data analysis system with specific photometric classification tools in the case of luminous highly evolved stars and certain types of emission line stars (WR, LBV, Be, HAeBe, T Tauri, symbiotic and post-AGB stars). The photometric indices suitable for the classification task will be selected with the help of synthetic photometry. This procedure will use observationally determined spectral energy distributions (SED-s) which will be compiled from available photometric and spectrometric databases and complemented by original low-resolution spectra observed at Tartu Observatory. In addition, Gaia radial velocity spectrometer observations will provide 10-15% of these objects (brighter ones) with medium-resolution spectra in a segment of near infrared region. To check the usage of these data for more refined classification, we plan to prepare a medium-resolution spectral atlas on representative targets of stellar types mentioned above. Spectroscopic observations for this atlas will be performed as a rule at Tartu Observatory and complemented with data from our collaboration partners. The results of the project will be used by Classification Development Unit at Gaia Data Analysis Consortium in the design of the Gaia data processing system.
