description: The main aim of the project is to shift the focus of studies of vegetation canopy reflectance into the hyperspectral and multiangular domains. This advance has been made possible by improvements in remote sensing technology. An image of Järvselja test site has been acquired by ESA's experimental Proba satellite making this type of data available to our workgroup. Hyprespectral and multiangular data has been shown to contain valuable information on forest canopy structure, unattainable by older instruments. Physically-based radiative transfer models will be applied to study sites with varying crown volume and shape, distribution of foliage inside a crown, shoot scattering function shape, bidirectional background reflectance spectrum, atmospheric conditions and other parameters to obtain the best possible match with reflectance measured from satellite and ground. The effect of these parameters will be modeled to estimate which parameters can be determined by inverting the model and to suggest the optimal set of parameters that need to be acquired by remote sensing instruments. The feasibility of constructing a cheap, compact and lightweight airborne forest brightness measuring system will be evaluated. This instrument can be used for improving the accuracy of forest inventories and measuring forest reflectance below the atmosphere for increasing the accuracy of satellite image interpretation.
