description: Current project focuses in reuse of wastes from oil shale retorting and energy production industry. Research relates to usage of semi coke and bottom ash in agriculture and synthesis of aluminium-silicate material from fly ash. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the present applications of oil shale waste and investigate the possible recycling methods. Due to implementation of new FBC technology and filters the fly ash emissions have been decreased, which could cause the acidification of soil and need for the calcification. The Estonian oil shale fly ash is characterized by significant content of trace elements and organic compounds. As such, it becomes mandatory to characterize the oil shale wastes by determination of its leaching characteristics. In order to guarantee that the oil shale ash is not affecting the quality of the soil (its microbiological activity), evaluate the impact of the ash on micro flora of different soils will be evaluated. Based on the laboratory and field leaching tests the scientific could be established for the use of ash as nutrient and limiting agent in different soils.

The second objective of the study is to develop novel methodology for production of aluminium-silicate material from fine fractions of oil shale fly ash with adsorption properties. The materials could give additional value to the combustion waste. Different conditions for synthesis lead to formation of different pore distribution and consequently different sorptive properties.
