reg no: ETF6592
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 3.3. Clinical Medicine
3.4. Health Sciences
status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Medicine
head of project: Marika Väli
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2008
description: The aim of the research is to find out the frequency of child abuse, risk factors and proportion of preventable deaths in total mortality in Estonia. The aim is also to compare correlation of alcohol intoxication level in children and adults. Up to now there is no data about causes of child abuse which hinders making scientific conclusions and working out purposeful strategies for combating child abuse and preventing child deaths of external causes. Only few articles analyze the clinical findings related to the blood alcohol concentration in children of different age-groups. Through the describing epidemiological study we collect data of injuries, case circumstances and consequences of abused children as well as data about child deaths of external causes in 2004-2008 to the data collecting form. The blood alcohol concentration and results of biochemical analyses will be compared at the same time. A cross-sectional questioning survey in randomly selected families will be carried out. A scientifc database will be created for the purpose of research and doctoral studies. Scientific overview of frequency and causes of child abuse enables to work out purposeful strategies for carrying out prevention, inhibit child abuse and decrease the number of child deaths of external causes. The results of the biochemical analyses will help doctors to analyse the possible causes of clinical finding typical to alcohol intoxication and chose the right treatment tactics, and the lawyers to estimate alcohol intoxication levels in children.
