description: | In Estonia and in other Eastern block societies in transition the social capital is endangered by different risk factors, which are characterized among other indicators by 10 years shorter average life expectancy compared to developed countries, especially among males. Life expectancy is influenced by high level of external causes of deaths causing financial burden to the state because of loss in life expectancy and productive years of life. In Estonia suicides constitute one-fifth from external causes of deaths, while alcohol was conducive for a half of fatal injuries. The main aims of the present study are * from the scientific point of view to find out the association between (1) alcohol consumption, (2) suicidal behavior and (3) other suicide risk factors in Estonia at the individual level and (4) to find out burden of disease caused by suicide and its economical effects using internationally comparable methods, introduce results in Estonian and international conferences and to publish results in international scientific journals. * from the applicable point of view to give evidence based material for working out suicide prevention strategy and action plan on national level, for working out and developing preventive methods in the frames of the present study and as well in the frames of the national alcohol policy program and the national mental health promotion program. The aim is also to recommend guidelines for other countries with similar historical background. Present study project will reveal and offer solutions for the acute problems in Estonian society – high suicide mortality and frequent alcohol abuse, which is exhausting to the economy of the state and to the social capital from different aspects. Present analysis will give evidence for strengthening social capital and for improving life quality. Especially important is comprehensive approach of the analysis, integration of experts from different specialties, and also orientation to science and practice. Results of the study will give better understanding about suicidal behavior as a complex phenomenon, internationally accepted methods used in study will give opportunity to publish the results in international journals. |
