duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2008
description: Studying landscape representations in the context of regional/national identity has been a dominating trend in the Anglo-American as well as Scandinavian theoretical and applied discussions of cultural geography. This interdisciplinary approach is new and regarded as innovative in Estonian human geography. One aim of the current project is to fulfil this gap and draw attention to studies of landscape representations in researching the questions of identity.
The key research questions are:
1. What landscape features include Estonian landscape imagery and to what extent has this landscape imagery changed in the context of the socio-historical and political transformations during the course of the 20th century?; 2. How are physical, visible landscapes transformed into symbolic landscapes?; 3. How are landscape representations connected with physical, visible landscapes: land use and land use dynamics?; 4. How are physical landscapes transformed into institutionalized ‘official’ symbolic landscapes, regarded as national landscapes?
The overall aim is to seize a wide spectrum of landscape representations from textual and visual representations to landscape imagery expressed in state policy and architecture.
