title: Application of new methods in osteo-archaeological research
reg no: ETF6899
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.1. History (incl. Archeology)
status: accepted
institution: Tallinna Ülikooli Ajaloo Instituut
head of project: Lembi Lõugas
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2009
description: From the archaeological material bone finds form very often a great majority. From the ancient burials the amount can reach to 100 %, from the cultural layers of Medieval villages and towns frequently to 80 %. Depending on the excavated antiquity such material can reach up to thousands or even ten thousands of fragments. Until now the rate of excavations and deposition of new material is much faster than laboratorial analyses of bone material.
The main aim of this study is to apply new and modern, both physical and chemical, methods in the analyses of bone finds, whereas to conduct all obtained results into a new level. Also, to elaborate the methodology of preparation of bone finds for chemical (and other) analyses (incl. sampling methodology), which allow considerable saving of material. As a result of the project, such methods will be selected out, which are the most efficient for analyzing Estonian bone material and which give the most objective information for conclusions.
