description: The main goal of the project is to analyse, on the basis of ecosemiotic theory, the concepts of mimicry, mimesis, and other terms designating imitation, and to apply these in the study of interrelations between Estonian culture and nature. The following topics will be focused on:
1. Theoretical analysis of the mimicry phenomena occurring in living nature and elaboration of the theory of mimicry from the standpoint of semiotics and communication theory.
2. Expanding the concept of mimicry for describing interrelations between culture and nature and developing suitable theoretical models within the framework of ecosemiotics.
3. Analysis of how nature is imitated, remade and idealised in Estonian culture, primarily in literature.
4. Mapping the meanings of the concepts of mimicry, mimesis and imitation; analysis of their use in humanities and natural sciences.
The project’s main emphasis is on theoretical basic research; at the same time results are applied to the empirical analysis of Estonian culture. The main result of the project will be the creation of a manuscript of the monograph on mimicry-related issues.
