title: Expansion of application possibilities of macrofossil analysis in palaeolimnological research
reg no: ETF6679
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.11. Natural Geography (incl Meteorology, Geophysics)
status: accepted
institution: Tallinna Ülikooli Ökoloogia Instituut
head of project: Tiiu Koff
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2008
description: The main goal of the proposed project is further development of the method of macrofossil analysis and its application in the study of bottom sediments of small Estonian lakes and the use of the findings in the reconstruction of the development of lakes.
The objects of the project are to find relationships between the composition of subfossil macroremains found in the sediments and the species composition of macrophytes that existed at the respective time and estimate processes and factors that determine decomposition or preservation of plant material. The methodological approach we plan to focus on quantitative determination of decomposition level of organic sediment and the proportions of different organic sediment fractions, study of the preservation processes of macroremains, determination of the origin of the amorphous organic herbaceous fraction of the sediment and application of C/N and fossil pigment analysis.
