reg no: ETF6791
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 5.10. Semiotics

status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Philosophy
head of project: Licia Taverna
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2007
description: The research intends to investigate the semantic universe of histories of survival (above all deportations and concentration camps) by using a semiotic-cultural methodology of analysis (Greimas, Lotman). The choice of a corpus of reference concerning two different nations and traditions as France and Estonia is founded on an epistemological hypothesis: comparisons of similar painful experiences lived by individuals belonging to different societies allow to point out specific discursive orders and subjective formations (Foucault). The specialization of the research team in the field of cultural and textual analysis is, in this sense, essential. The involvement of a doctorate student working on comparative studies is an active part of the project. The level of international collaboration is based on two of the most important French centres of research on semiotics and cultures (Ce.re.s. of Limoges and Ce.vi.po.f of Paris). Apart from the goal of a realization of corpus, references and bibliographies belonging to two different traditions, one other important achievement foreseen by the research team is the application of a semiotic perspective which has never been explored in this sense and with two methodologies, one developed in France (Greimas) and the other one in Estonia (Lotman), which have never used together in this field.
