Theoretical background Joint monograph “Texts on Art andArchitecture” 3 deals with art history and art criticism in Estonia from 1900 up to 1918. The first volume “Tekste kunstist ja arhitektuurist.1.Kunstikirjutis Eestis 1777-1863. Texte über Kunst und Arhitektur. 1. Kunstschreibung in Estland 1777-1863” came out in 2000, the second volume (years 1864-1900) in 2004. The authors of monographs are J. Keevallik, R. Loodus, L. Viiroja. In the Estonian art history these monographs are the first selections of articles on art history and art ctiticism, trough commented upon and annotated. The beginning of the 20th century was an intricate period in Estonian culture: successfully advanced Estonian national art was inertwined with Baltic-German art world, still of vitality. Several art-historians had already dealt witch the problems of art life and conceptions of art of this period: L Viiroja “Kunstist ja kunstikäsitlusest 19. sajandi lõpust kuni aastani 1916”(1993), R. Loodus “Kunstielu Eesti linnades 1900-1918”(1994), J. Keevallik “Verbreitung der Informationen über die Kunst im deutschbaltischen Schrifttum in Estland um 1900” (Kunst im Ostseeraum. Greifswalder Kunsthistorische Studien. 3. Bd., 1999). But series of Monographs “Texts on Art and Architecture” where scientifically investigated research work and selected texts togheter with comments and annotations give a systematic treatment of the development of Estonian art, are unparalleled in Estonia. Main aims of the paper The empirical material is large and various. The main aim of the monograph is to give an overview of art criticism and art history in Estonia, publicize and analyze the most valuable texts and present them against as broad background as possible.It brings out the peculiarities of the development of Estonian art, conceptions of art and emphasizes the openness of Estonian art criticism to European culture. Research methods The comparative historical method seems to be the most suitable in the writing of the monograph in question. The developments in Estonian art and art world, the relationship between the art and its beholder will be regarded in their direct correlation with the processes in the Europe, especially in Germany. Institutions and individuals taking part in the project The project will be carried out in the Institut of History. The main author will be Rein Loodus, candidate of art history and Juta Keevallik, MA, lecturer at Tartu University. The monograph will be published in Estonian Academic Publishers as well as first and second volumes of former joint project. The completed monograph will serve as handbook for researchers of Estonian and Baltic-Germanart and culture, a study aid for students and a reference book for all thoose with an interest in history of art and culture. Presumable importance to science Such publication is an indispensable basis for the further research of history of visual arts in Estonia. The monograph will be published in Estonian and in German because will also be of interest from international, especially from German point of view.
