description: The proposed project will focus on investigation of functionally important genetic variation linked to fitness related traits during early life stages in Atlantic salmon. The project combines both field and laboratory experiments and utilizes genetic linkage mapping methodologies (QTL mapping and viability locus mapping) to identify and characterize genomic regions associated with viability, embryonic development rate, time of emergence, length and weight of fry during early life stages.

The results of the project are expected to be of wide scientific interest both among geneticists and ecologists, as the combination of recently developed viability and ‘traditional’ QTL mapping methodologies both in experimental and natural environments has not been applied yet anywhere. Information about underlying genetic basis of ecologically relevant phenotypic traits would be of great significance for genetic diversity preservation efforts of wild salmonid species in Estonia and worldwide, especially in the light of active re-establishment efforts of previously extinct salmonid populations in many countries.
