description: | Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has emerged as one of the major chronic diseases in our society while the information about the causes, prevalence, and burden of COPD is limited. This population based cross-sectional survey will be conducted in the frame of Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) survey, a large world wide study that aims to measure the prevalence of COPD and its risk factors in various countries around the world and to estimate the burden of COPD in terms of its impact on quality of life, activity limitation, respiratory symptoms, and use of health care services. Even though smoking is the major risk factor in COPD, the susceptibility to develop COPD differs between smokers. The factors explaining this difference in susceptibility is partly unknown. In addition to the core protocol, the study conducted in Tartu, Uppsala and Reykjavik will test the hypothesis that chronic subclinical infections and infections that bring a lifelong immune response may increase systemic inflammation and thereby be related to lung function impairement and COPD. By particpating in the BOLD study our three centres contribute to global knowledge of COPD and have also extended posibility to test the associations between systemic inflammation, infectious burden and COPD. |
