description: Research in the fields of innovation, commercialization of new products, networks and clusters has been rather active but so far most of the authors have focused on the experiences of big and/or developed countries. Previous research is also characterized by focus on either the enterprise, industry, country or international level; integrated approaches are rare. Since there can be significant differences in the innovative potential in terms of these levels, an integrated approach would enable a more adequate description of the real needs and problems.

There is only a limited body of research done in Estonia in the fields of innovative activities and commercialization of the new products. The development perspectives of Estonia, according to the country’s national development plan, are mainly determined by the activity of small and medium-sized firms. Promotion of the innovative activities of firms and development of a national innovation system are the focal points of the strategy.

The main aim of the research project is to identify the opportunities for promoting innovative activities and enhancing commercialization of new products in Estonian enterprises through intensifying and supporting cooperative activities in networks and clusters. The focus is on analyzing the cooperative activities from the perspective of enterprise, sector, national and international levels. As a result of the project the detailed suggestions for enhancing cooperative activities for each of the levels can be made.

As a result of the project, two monographs and a number of conference papers will be published. There are also plans to publish some of the findings in international research journals and as chapters in international monographs. 5 doctoral dissertations and 10 master theses that are related to the project are expected to be defended in the project period.
