title: Relations between pollen spectra of small lakes and the vegetation around the lakes in case of different forest cover conditions.
reg no: ETF6855
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.11. Natural Geography (incl Meteorology, Geophysics)
status: accepted
institution: Tallinna Ülikooli Ökoloogia Instituut
head of project: Mihkel Kangur
duration: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2008
description: The main goal of the project is to study how the changes in forest cover in the surroundings of some small Estonian lakes are reflected in the pollen profiles from these lakes. Our aim is to find the correlation coefficients for assessing, on the basis of the ratio of tree pollen to herb pollen in the sediment, the forest cover conditions in the landscape around the lake. For studying the causes of changes in forest cover and for reconstructing the history of forest fires also the microscopic charcoal analyses will be applied. The influence of in-lake processes on formation of pollen spectra will be also studied. Basing on the pollen accumulated in sediments the elaborated pollen-vegetation relationships enable to reconstruct quantitatively the past changes in vegetation structure.
