description: | Manors occupy an important place in Estonia's architectural heritage. To begin with, there are a remarkable number of them, with more than 1,100 private, crown, city and church manors in the area of present-day Estonia a century ago. Although many of the manors have disappeared almost without a trace, there are about five hundred manors where both the mansion and the surrounding estate park still survive. The objective of the proposed project is to enhance the place of the country residences in the Estonian cultural context where they have been treated disdainfully thoroughout the Soviet period, as "a part of the architecture of the exploiter classes". Its aim is not merely to highlight the most prominent buildings and parks, but also to analyze the ways of the recycling of old manors, their adaptation to modern needs. The first stage of the research work embraces the collection and processing of the initial documentation: sketches and nature studies, series of photographs and related descriptions. It also includes the collection of documentation for historic research. The identification carried out in this way illuminates the prevailing situation in the country residences and also enables the originators of the project to obtain thorough and detailed information about the subject of their study. The second stage consists of an monograph based on collected materials, in which not just photographs and descriptions of the manors' present situation, but also data of each manor's earlier building history, people connected with them, the role each manor played in the history of local culture, etc. |
