description: | 1. The aim of the project is to study 1) the complementary nature of ways of existence of different texts and its influence on processes of reception; 2) the dynamism between the verbal and the visual dominant at the association of different forms of occurrence of a text; 3) the translatability of texts transferring and connecting different types of art, the translatability and power of translation of distinct sorts of art; 4) the systematic variability of the relationship between the verbal and the visual in culture, its relative importance in creative thinking and cultural meaning production. 2. The aims can be reasoned by the need to study the mental identity of texts in the situation where one and the same text can simultaneously exist in verbal, visual, audio and audio-visual mode. At the same time often the ordinary connections between the original text and later versions disappear and every text always functions as the original for a receiver. This is a new reality of culture that needs systematic analysis as both a theoretical and an empirical (and a pedagogical) problem. This is primarily due to the autonomy or identity of texts and the mixing of cultural languages. 3. The work will result in 1) creation of typology in order to describe the principal possibilities of co-functioning of visual and verbal languages or linguistic elements under the conditions of cultural intertextuality, interdiscursivity, intermediality and hypermediality; 2) creation of a transformational model to describe the movement of texts from one type of art or media into another; 3) description of new processes and textual associations and transformations in Estonian culture primarily on the basis of literature, fine arts, film, theatre, printed and hypermedia texts. Results will be put out in the form of theoretical articles and a collective monograph, and empirical analyses. |
