description: The main aims of the present study are
* from the scientific approach to find out correlation between (1) alcohol and drug use, (2) premature deaths and suicidal behavior and (3) social processes in Estonia both on the macro level - and on the individual level using internationally comparable methods and to publish results.
* from the applicable point of view to give scientific basis for finding the possibilities to decrease premature deaths and suicidal behavior by target groups. This could be the evidence based procedure for working out and developing preventive methods in the frames of the present study and as well in the frames of the national alcohol policy program and the national mental health promotion program. The aim is also to recommend guidelines for other countries with similar historical background.

Present study project will reveal and offer solutions for the acute problems in Estonian society - relatively low average and expected life expectancy especially among male population because of premature death, among them suicide, which is exhausting to the economy of the state and to the social capital from different aspects. Taken mission/purpose will be settled first time in Estonia. Especially important is comprehensive approach, integrating experts from different specialties, also orientation to the science and practice. Results will be announced in internationally reviewed journals and theses based on on different parts of study will be defended.
Study will supplement possibilities of prevention in national alcohol policy and will give scientific basis for the national mental health program with presenting concrete target groups, risk factors and protective factors and to apply relevant arrangement, which will promise economic profit for the state.
The study is supposed to be important thus the main target group will probably be the work force males, who are very important resources in the society and probably also women, because of explosively increasing alcohol and drug abuse among them.
Present study will demonstrate relation between (1) dramatically increased premature death & suicidal behavior in countries of transition, (2) sociopolitical processes on the macro level and (3) the alcohol and drug consumption; novel aspect of the study is that results will be summarized on the individual and aggregate level (qualitative and quantitative approach); internationally accepted methods used in study will give opportunity to publish the results in international journals.
Evidence based and evaluated results for prevention could by applied for other societies of transition.
