description: | The aim of the project is to describe the role the Tallinn text plays in Russian culture. The Tallinn text can be described by means of interpretation of literary texts related to Tallinn. In addition to textual interpretation, we should also take into account the arts, i.e. painting, architecture, theatre, and cinema. We should also consider such factors as cross-genre, cross-temporal, and cross-personal nature of the phenomenon. This approach would enable us to develop a mythological model of Tallinn fixed in Russian cultural consciousness. The men of letters who created the Tallinn text shaped its principles and clichés, the description of which is reserved for the scholars involved in a project. The study of the role of Tallinn text in Russian culture will result in confirmation of its constant presence in literature and visual arts, as well as in Russian consciousness. In terms of semiotics, the Tallinn texts may be considered as a looking glass, in which one sees his own face through the eyes of some other person. The person standing by the looking glass estranges himself from the image, and realizes the depth of his personality. On its turn, the estrangement supports any kind of dialog, including the cultural one. When interpreting the Tallinn text we are also supposed to describe the image of Tallinn, Estonia and Estonians in the consciousness of famous and influential writers, painters, actors, directors, etc. This would enable us to understand the role of Tallinn as a symbol of Estonia. The ultimate end of the project is a collection of essays, which would be worthy of note of the common readers, and at the same time have a stimulating effect on other scholars. The collection will be used at schools and other educational institutions by students, teachers, and guides. The study will also provide a background for a better understanding of Estonian-Russian politic relations. Apart from the book, we are going to publish numerous essays and articles in Russian and Estonian magazines. We also intend to sponsor a conference. |
