description: The objective of the research project is to study the properties of oil shale semi-coke, the waste that is considered to be hazardous, in order to be reused in the production of recultivation substance. The recultivation substance is the plant growth substrate, produced by mixing the semi-coke and peat, which can be used in the recultivation of waste dumps, ash fields, semi-coke dumps etc.
The preliminary experiments have revealed that the fresh semi-coke and the recultivation substance produced from it are toxic to plants at the beginning, but by ageing their toxicity and inhibiting effect on plant growth decrease.
The main purpose of this project is to find out the reasons for the phytotoxicity of oil shale semi-coke and the recultivation substance. Therefore, it is planned to investigate the contents of contaminants in the semi-coke, their changes in the composition of recultivation substance and how the alteration of chemical parameters are connected to the changes of phytotoxicity in time.
In the second part of the research project the experiments with pure substances, which are found to be potentially toxic to plants, will be carried out to study their effect to different plant species, and to find out the concentrations having the toxic influence. The final goal is to work out indicator parameters on the basis of which it could be possible to decide about the suitability of recultivation substance to be safely applied as the plant growth substrate.
This research project has also a practical application. The results received in this project enable one to complement the technology of the preparation of recultivation substance so that the production of environmentally friendly growth substrate would be guaranteed.
