title: Constructions with Basic Estonian Words: Typological Perspective
reg no: ETF5813
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.3. Linguistics
status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Philosophy
head of project: Renate Pajusalu
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2007
description: The proposed project focusses on the regularities in the meaning and use of Basic Estonian Vocabulary (i.e., the most frequent and cognitively the most central words) in various grammatical constructions. An earlier grant project - "An Analysis of Basic Vocabulary Operators" - studied mostly the semantic structure and, in case of some words, such as pronouns, the pragmatic use of such words, adopting thus a lexeme-oriented perspective. The aim of the new project is to analyse the relations between the meaning of these words and the grammatical constructions in which the words occur.

Besides basic vocabulary operators, the project will involve the basic nouns and adjectives used for describing a human being. Constructions will be studied from a variety of perspectives: the use of pronouns in Estonian dialects, development of constructions in child language, relevance of constructions to learning Estonian as the second language.

The research is typologically oriented: the findings will be compared with data concerning other languages (primarily Russian, Latvian, Finnish, and English, but also other languages).

The research will be based on the principles of cognitive semantics and grammar. Experimental methods will be designed and used to study language users' intuitions concerning their linguistic choices. ...
