title: Enzymology of glycopolymer degradation: processivity of the enzymes, underlying structures and influencing factors
reg no: ETF5848
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.7. Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Biology and Geography
head of project: Priit Väljamäe
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2006
description: Present situation in the enzymology of glycopolymer degradation can be characterized by the accumulation of structural information with no concomitant studies on enzyme kinetics. The lack of kinetic information has prevented the identification of the structures underlying kinetic properties of the enzymes like processivity. The present project focuses on development of well defined strategies and polymeric model substrates for the studies of the enzyme kinetics of glycopolymer degradation. The subject of main efforts will be the identification of the structures underlying processivity- one of the key property of the enzymes active in glycopolymer degradation. Identification of the rate limiting step in crystalline cellulose hydrolysis and analysis of the product inhibition of cellulases will also be subjected. Although the project focuses on cellulose degradation and cellulases, other enzymes active in glycopolymer degradation like amylases, chitinases and pectinases will also be included.
