description: Cancer, lung cancer included is worldwide problem. Among the cancer mortality is the lung cancer leading cause of cancer death in the world and in Estonia as well. Lung cancer is associated with extremely bad prognosis. 5 years overall survival is depending on stage about 13-15%. Approximately 700 new lung cancer cases register in Estonia every year. The incident case ratio between men and women is 4:1. Despite of exact diagnostics of histological subgroups of lung cancer is the clinical course of the same stage patients quite a different. This fact suggests that histological form of cancer is not sufficient predictor of clinical course of the disease. From standpoint of treatment strategy and prognosis due to big amount of microscopically undistinguishable cancer subgroups it is nowadays not enough to confine with histological diagnosis only. One new possibility in diagnostics of malignant tumor, in prediction of course of the disease and in choosing treatment strategy is to investigate the signature of cancers gene expression and single nucleotide polymorphisms of candidate genes using microarray technology.
The purpose of our study is to investigate and evaluate the gene expression signature and haplotypes of informed patients with non-small cell lung cancer, to divide patients on the basis of expression profile and clinical course of the disease into subgroups, to find molecular markers for better and reliable identification on the basis of expression, genotyping and also clinical course and survival data.
