description: | Because of emerging of new textual and theatrical forms of expression during the last decades (so-called post-dramatic theatre) theatre researchers are faced with the task to elaborate new analytical tools. The research project Fictional worlds in dramatic and post-dramatic theatre is an attempt to solve this task. The starting point of the project is the modelling of theatre performance as fictional world, combined with the concept of play(ing). The model of played world enables to investigate the relationships of dramatic text and its production (mise-en-scène), and a performance as an aesthetic whole. The main interrelated goals of the project are: a) to elaborate the theoretical model of fictional world, which would take into consideration artistic specificity of the theatre and performative and communicative processes a performance is based upon; b) to apply the elaborated model to the analysis of both post-dramatic and traditional (dramatic) texts and productions; c) on the basis of the comparative analysis, to clarify how the radical changes of the relationship between text and production in post-dramatic theatre have influenced the way of constructing and the nature of stage worlds (relation of fictional – real, acting practices, manifestations of performativity, etc; d) to (re)formulate the characteristic features of post-dramatic theatre as general conclusion. The model of played world will be combined with other approaches (genetic analysis, reception studies). The comparative perspective is used throughout the research. The main research object is Estonian present-day theatre. The project will focus on the phenomenon of “directors’ dramaturgy”: a) the creative work of a young director Tiit Ojasoo (in collaboration with Ene-Liis Semper): No more tears (2002); Juliet (2004), Sometimes one feels as if life is over and there has been no love in it (2005), etc; b) post-modern texts and productions by Mati Unt, like An Hour of ghosts in the castle of Kadriorg (after Bachelard’s Poetics of Space, 2000), Hot (after Shakespeare’s Othello, 2002), Style or What is the world’s name? (2003), etc; c) productions, based on folklore and folk culture, like Lemminkäinen by Anne Türnpu (2005), Taarka by Kauksi Ülle (2005, directed by Ain Mäeots), etc – in order to find out how pre-dramatic material functions as/in post-dramatic theatre; d) productions of the Von Krahl Theatre, combining folklore and new technological media, like Estonian ballads by Veljo Tormis (2004, directed by Peeter Jalakas), etc. Innovative productions will be chosen from dramatic theatre (work of Priit Pedajas, etc). The corpus of texts and productions will be specified and supplemented in the course of the project. Some post-dramatic productions of foreign theatre (primarily of Latvian and Lithuanian theatre) will be studied as well (Alvis Hermanis, Eimuntas Nekrošius, etc). The project is closely linked with the research of the international working group (Post)dramatic Text in Theatrical Context by the International Federation for Theatre Research. Research results will be published in the L. Epner’s monograph on the problems of performance analysis and in the collection of articles Fictional Worlds in the Theatre. |
