description: | Goals: To determine science teachers’ understanding of the nature of science (NOS) and its interrelationship with the nature of science education (NSE) To determine whether students’ interest in science and science related careers can be raised by changes in teacher understanding of the nature of science (NOS) and hence the nature of science education (NSE), controlling for teacher ownership of STL teaching (promoting scientific and technological literacy for all). To develop a theoretical model useful for promoting a more positive image of science to students through a better teacher appreciation of the nature of science (NOS) and the nature of science education NSE). Outcomes: 1. Measurement of science teachers’ views about the nature of science (NOS), the nature of science education (NSE) and their interrelationship, and identifying teachers’ views using phenomenographic approaches. 2. Establishment of an interrelationship between teacher ownership of STL teaching and phenomenographic characterisations of teachers’ views on the nature of science and nature of science education 3. Evaluation of the effectiveness of theoretical justified teacher intervention designed to enhance teacher’s understanding of the nature of science (NOS) and the nature of science education (NSE), thus helping teacher’s ownership of STL teaching which promotes NSE objectives and a more positive image of science among students. 4. A Monograph identifying student gains and implications for policy makers and curriculum developers on the value of an appreciation of the NOS in NSE and implementing the intended curriculum |
